Food Retail

PICKING BY PALLET, CASE, OR PIECE FOR GROCERY DISTRIBUTION

With low margins and changing consumer behavior, staying competitive in the grocery market is harder than ever. Retailers and wholesalers have to accommodate new shopper trends across the globe. Making a difference in the food retail marketplace means a strategy that extends outside of the grocery aisle.

By implementing an automatic storage and retrieval system as a picking solution for brick and mortar and e-commerce, retailers can stay ahead of trends — while also decreasing labor needs. Many retailers are turning to compact distribution centers to provide same-day delivery without reducing in-store inventory. Others, however, are using small automation systems for in-store picking in their back of the store. Some wholesalers provide turnkey solutions for their banners, with everything from e-commerce sites to last-mile delivery service included. Whatever the strategy, SSI SCHAEFER can help.

Grocery automation must meet specific criteria established by the CFIA. With systems designed to meet any frozen or fresh product criteria, SSI SCHAEFER can handle your grocery application.

New Intelligent Logistics Standards Set by C&S Wholesale
SSI SCHAEFER collaborated with C&S Wholesale Grocers, one of the largest food wholesalers in the U.S. Knowing this wholesale grocer needed a modern case picking system, SSI SCHAEFER installed the Schäfer Case Picking system. While this automation was important, the project also needed automation of border-related case picking and dispatch of shipments integrated into their operation. The end result is an automated distribution center within a high bay warehouse with approximately 90,000 tray spaces. Three stories divide the material flow and picking areas, enabling more than 100,000 cartons of goods of throughput.

Throughputs can vary depending on system type, storage location amounts, and other factors. As accuracy of fulfillment increases, supply chain inventory improves, as well.

With retrofits and small local distribution centers, omnichannel distribution for grocery is more common than ever. Fulfillment strategies like these allow grocers and wholesalers to offer same-day delivery or in-store pick-up without depleting shelf inventory.
